Sugar island of the Philippines
Negros has just 3 million inhabitants and is the biggest island of the Visayas with more than 13,000 sq. kms.
The island Negros lies in the southwest of the island group Visayas between the islands Cebu and Panay.
Negritos one calls the old inhabitants of Negros. Still today some groups of this minority live in the mountain regions.
Language
The colloquial language in the area Negros of Occidental is Illongo and in Negros Oriental Cebuano is spoken. In the schools the national language Tagalog (Filipino) is informed beside English.
Tourism
After many years the tourism on Negros developed only very slowly, the tourism industry has lately become an important economic factor.
Beach Resorts and diving districts
Particularly in the south of the island, with many clarify, not to overcrowded beaches and excellent diving possibilities, the tourism has revived very much.
Brown sand
The sand on the sea beach of Negros is not white, like on Boracay, however, also do not believe so darkly how many if they think of the name of the island "Negros".

Dumaguete
Duma goodness city is the capital of Negros Oriental. She lies in the east of the island and has approx. 117,000 inhabitants.
The town owns an airport and good Fährverbindungen to too many places on the Philippines.
The journey with a ferry to the neighbouring island Cebu lasts approx. 30 minutes.
Here one meets: Rizal boulevard
In the evening a popular aim is of the Rizal boulevard with his adjoining parks, the numerous bars, restaurants and discos to the dawdling.

The city of Dumagete is a nice provincial town with Spanish atmosphere and is visited with pleasure by foreign tourists.
Also pensioners from the USA, Australia and different European countries have sat down here.

Start place also lies with the harbour for coach travelling to the numerous tourism sighting.

Bacolod
Bacolod lies in the west of Negros and is the biggest town and also the capital of the province of Negros Occidental with 500,000 inhabitants.
Bacolod is known for numerous schools and universities with high level.
In 2005 Bacolod was distinguished as the greenest and cleanest town of the Philippines.
Bacolod with a quick ferry can be reached from Iloilo on the neighbouring island Panay in 2 hours.

Bacolod also owns an airport.
Economy
On about 450,000 hectares, this is more than half of the land surface of Negros, is grown sugarcane.
About 60% of the Philippine sugar production comes from the island Negros. Strongholds of the sugar industry are in Victorias and Binalbagan where also the biggest sugar refineries are.
Sacadas one calls the workers which the sugarcane harvest.
Harvest season is from October to May. The shrubs must be cut with a sharp knife (Bolo) briefly above the surface of the earth. This is a very heavy work in bent down position.
The sugar export goes to many countries of the earth till the USA and Canada.
Beside sugarcane rice, maize and bananas are still grown. Moreover, different products from the cultivation are won by coconut trees.
From meaning is also the fish-processing industry.
The distance between arm and empire is coined on Negros very much. A rich upper class makes good profits and the rural population often lives in poverty.
